Baby Boom at the Key West Aquarium

stingraysThe stork has brought the Key West Aquarium 11 baby stingrays. The Aquarium has a new exhibit, Stingray Bay, where visitors can pet and feed the Aquarium’s eight baby cow nose rays. Cow nose rays can be found in the waters off the Florida Keys and are members of the eagle ray family. They have rhomboidal shaped bodies and wide set eyes. They are very docile and friendly. On February 15, one of our southern stingrays gave birth to a litter of three pups. The baby rays are now living with their cow nose cousins in Stingray Bay.

Now with all of these baby rays, we need to give them names. Later this month, we will kick off our "Name the Rays" contest on Facebook where not only will our stingrays get some great names, but we will have some great prizes to give away as well.

Historic Tours of America Sponsors a Service Dog for a Returning Veteran

Chris Belland and patriot service dogsHistoric Tours of America CEO Chris Belland recently presented a check for $5,000 to Susan Bolton of Patriot Service Dogs. Patriot Service Dogs is dedicated to providing returning veterans in need with service dogs. The companies of Historic Tours of America, Old Town Trolley Tours, Conch Tour Train, Ghosts & Gravestones, Key West Aquarium, San Diego Seals, The Old Jail, Oldest Store Museum Experience, Harry S. Truman Little White House and the Key West Shipwreck Treasures Museum each donated $1 from every ticket sold on Veterans Day; the money will cover the cost to raise, train, and place a service dog.

“Our Veterans Day promotion has grown from a discounted ticket to complimentary admission on several days around and on Veterans Day for active duty, retired and honorably discharged military, police and fire veterans,” says Belland. “The week of Veterans Day, all of our operations hand out Remembrance Day poppies to our guests to remind them that as a country and community we can never thank our veterans enough.”

In addition to our donation, we had collection boxes at all of our ticketing locations so our guests could contribute as well. We are looking forward to sponsoring another dog this year.”

Patriot Service Dogs is a Jacksonville based 501(c)(3) organization whose primary goal is to place well trained service dogs with veterans with a mobility disability. Patriot service dogs is an all-volunteer organization. If you would like more information about Patriot Service Dogs, you can visit their website at patriotservicedogs.org.
