The City's lifetime-appointed selection committee initially chose the first 36 men and women, leaving room for future generations to add their choices. Careful ongoing study and consideration of historic data and intense debate has ensured that those who were chosen will give the visitors to the garden an accurate and comprehensive interpretation of our past. The bronze plaque on each pedestal will tell not only the history of the selected person but, in doing so, reveal a fascinating part of our island's history.
