Historic Tours of America is committed to protecting the environment and has been since it began in 1980.

Nearly all of our touring, shuttle and service vehicles run on clean burning propane. Propane is one of the lightest, simplest hydrocarbons in existence, and, as a result, is one of the cleanest burning of all alternative fuels. Propane gas is nontoxic, so it's not harmful to soil and water. Clean burning fuel helps in the preservation of the monuments, museums and historical buildings that we share with our guests during our tours. In 2006, Old Town Trolley Tours of San Diego was awarded Propane Exceptional Energy Fleet Award.

"By eliminating water delivery service, we cut down on plastic, gasoline for delivery and contaminates..."

Each of our offices is equipped with recycling stations for paper and plastic. Paper is reused as appropriate in fax and copy machines. We have eliminated the use of plastic cups and Styrofoam and now use compostable corn cups and coffee cups with lining made from domestic plants, not oil. Our plates are made from sugarcane, utilizing the pulp that is normally discarded or burned. Cutlery is made from plant starch.

Historic Tours of America is implementing bottle-less water coolers. These filtration systems work with a building’s own water system to provide clean hot and cold water. By eliminating water delivery service, we cut down on plastic, gasoline for delivery and contaminates. Not only does it make less of an impact on the environment but makes better economic sense to our bottom line.

Historic Tours of America is also proud that its CEO, Chris Belland, has been a vocal advocate for the environmental movement in Key West. Chris sits on the Mayor’s Green Coalition and created the Love Your Island program. He has given presentations on the environment to civic groups, professional organizations and school children and is the environmental columnist for the Key West Citizen.
